MAYWEATHER VS. MCGREGOR: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE THE AUG 26 FIGHT

We’re only a few days away from the boxing match we’ve all been waiting to happen. Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Conor McGregor, also known as “The Money Fight”, a match between undefeated eleven-time five division professional boxing world champion Floyd Mayweather and the current UFC Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor is to be held on August 26, 2017, at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada. Despite his success in the UFC, McGregor kept showing an interest in boxing competitively and talked a lot about the idea of a “money fight” with Mayweather. UFC president Dana White at first dismissed the rumors of the fight actually happening since McGregor was under contract with the UFC. However, on March 7, 2017, Mayweather called upon McGregor to “sign the paper” and make the fight happen already, as he had had enough of McGregor “blowing smoke up everybody’s ass.” Following this, Dana White said he would not stop McGregor from fighting and deprive him of quite a generous sum the match would bring. On May 18, 2017, McGregor finally agreed to all of Mayweather’s terms and signed the contract.

BROADCASTING

In the US, the fight, which is expected to start at around 5am BST, will be shown on Showtime Sports. American fans will have to pay $89.99 to watch in standard definition, and $99.99 for HD. In the UK, it is being shown on Sky Box Office, and it will cost the viewers £19.95, or €24.95 for the Irish fans.

OFFICIALS AND RULES

On August 16, 2017, the officials were named for the fight:

–          Referee: Robert Byrd

–          Judges: Burt Clements, Guido Cavalleri, and Dave Moretti

The fight will be held under boxing rules, which might be a challenge for a mixed martial artist such as McGregor. Nevada rules state that boxing matches between fighters over 147lbs must use 10oz gloves, but after both McGregor and Mayweather submitted formal requests to use smaller ones, 8oz gloves, in their fight, which is contracted at 154lbs, the Nevada State Athletic Commission decided to look past the rules this time.

FIGHTING HISTORY

Mayweather retired in 2015 undefeated, with 49 wins. He is said to be one of the best defensive fighters in history, with an amazing ability to evade punishment with his skillful movements. If he wins, he’ll surpass a former heavyweight Rocky Marciano, who also retired undefeated with an unblemished 49-0 record.

McGregor is the UFC’s reigning lightweight champion and former featherweight champion, famous for his bravado and explosive knockout power. He was the first UFC fighter to hold two belts at the same time, having knocked out Eddie Alvarez last November for the lightweight championship.

WHAT ARE THE ODDS?

Bookies have immediately predicted a Mayweather win, since this match will be the first professional boxing match for the 29-year-old McGregor. McGregor is, however, one of the leading figures in the UFC, and has a pretty strong motivation. The Irishman said: “The disrespect of my skill set [is motivating]: I look at people and their minds are closed. ‘It’s a set way and there’s no other way.’”

So whoever wins, this will definitely be one of the most intense boxing matches ever.
